The Criterion Collection
The English Patient is a passionate World War II epic unfolding around the intricately involved lives of four people brought together by the mysterious Count Laszlo de Almásy (Ralph Fiennes).
They found him in the desert, in the wreckage of a plane. A man with no name and no country, he became known as "The English Patient”. Badly injured and with no memories he is cared for in an abandoned monastery by a young nurse named Hana (Juliette Binoche). She too is a victim of the war. Everyone she has loved she has lost.
Slowly the patient reveals to Hana the story of his passionate affair with the married Katherine Clifton (Kristin Scott Thomas). When Hana and the patient are joined by a mysterious spy named Carravagio (Willem Dafoe) the truth behind the English Patient’s identity is discovered.
The English Patient is based on the Booker Prize winning novel by Michael Ondaatje and was directed and adapted by Anthony Minghella. An instant hit, the film won 9 Oscars including Best Film, Best Director and Best Supporting Actress for Juliette Binoche. She also won the Best Actress Award at the Berlin Film Festival for her role.
